Edinburg police arrested a Harwell Middle School seventh-grade teacher Monday on charges of sexual assault and improper relationship between an educator and student.
Miguel Condes, 25, was arrested following an investigation into a Friday report filed with the Edinburg Police Department by relatives of a 14-year-old female student, said Lt. Oscar Treviño, Edinburg police spokesman.
“Apparently there was some type of romantic interlude between the two on Thursday night, which led to the sexual assault,” Treviño said.
The assault allegedly took place off-campus after he picked the student up from a residence and took her to an undisclosed location, Treviño said.
He was taken into custody Monday after administrators directed him to report to the district’s police department.
Edinburg school district spokesman Gilbert Tagle said Condes is suspended from duties pending further court action. The district is also conducting its own investigation into the matter, he said.
The findings of that investigation will be presented to school district trustees for further action.
“It is the policy of Edinburg CISD to not discuss personnel issues while the investigation is ongoing,” Tagle said. “However, the individual in question has been removed from access to students.”
Condes was arraigned Monday in Edinburg Municipal Court, with a bond of $200,000 set for each charge.
