A former teacher accused of abusing a 7-year-old student at Blazier Elementary School in Southeast Austin was sentenced Wednesday to 16 years in jail.
John Vasquez was found not guilty Tuesday of aggravated sexual assault of a child, but a jury did convict him on charges of indecency with a child and having an improper relationship with a student. He received 16-year sentences for both, and will serve them concurrently.
Police say Vasquez sexually assaulted the student several times between January and March 2011. A child development worker took the stand Wednesday morning to testify that the student complained to her about Vasquez’s assaults. The former teacher has maintained he is innocent.
