A Johnson County Central High School teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student pleaded not guilty Monday to a charge of first-degree sexual assault of a minor.
Carrie Miller, 24, waived her right to appear in Johnson County District Court Monday but entered a not guilty plea to the single charge of having sex with a 15-year-old student.
The case is set for jury trial Sept. 10. In a separate case in Nemaha County, where many occurrences of the physical relationship allegedly took place, Miller faces five charges of first-degree sexual assault of a minor, which is a class 2 felony.
Miller previously pleaded not guilty to all charges in that case and is scheduled for a jury trial on Aug. 13.
Miller, of Tecumseh, was arrested in January after authorities learned of her alleged relationship with a male student.
According to Johnson County Court documents, sheriff’s deputies and Nebraska State Patrol officers learned that the male had sexual physical contact with the Spanish teacher dating to when he was 15 years old.
Court documents stated the two met before the 2012-2013 school year and that Miller gave her phone number to students.
Miller and the male student regularly communicated via phone and text, according to the documents, which is how their sexual encounters were arranged. Explicit photos were also sent between the two via electronic device, the documents state.
The first sexual contact between the two is believed to have occurred in October 2012, and the pair allegedly engaged in sexual contact 50-60 times through October 2013.
Authorities believe the majority of these occurrences happened in Miller’s vehicle while parked in an abandoned farmstead in Nemaha County.
