A plea deal has been reached in the case of Tanikka Queen, a local substitute teacher accused of having sex with a 15-year-old middle school student.
Under the deal, prosecutors agreed to drop 43 counts against Queen, if she pleads guilty to two felony counts. Under the agreement, she could face up to 23 years in prison, but she is also available for parole.
Queen, who is 22 years old, worked at Hyde Park Middle School. She was facing charges ranging from first-degree kidnapping to statutory sexual seduction.
“In this situation, in light of the negotiations, these are probationable offenses,” said attorney John Momot. “She’s had no prior contact with law enforcement whatsoever in her lifetime, she’s been an exemplary student, I think she would be entitled to some kind of relief.”
Judge Joe Siscento ruled her $100,000 bail could be reduced to $50,000. However, if she can make bail, the ex-teacher would be under house arrest and cannot have access to the Internet.
Queen will undergo a psychological evaluation before her sentencing. She is due back in court on April 21.
