Police arrested a former teacher at a high performing charter school on charges he sexually assaulted a student on campus.
Derek Gray now faces felony sexual assault, child molestation, enticing a child for indecent purposes and aggravated sodomy.
Officers said the attack happened at the Elite Scholars Academy near Morrow around February of this year.
A warrant indicates the assault involved a student under the age of 16 in a band room on campus. “I think it’s awful. Oh my goodness, they just made school of the year just last year,” said one parent outside the school, who asked not to be identified.
Elite Scholars Academy was named a 2012 Georgia School of Excellence. The Clayton County School District sent a statement that reads: “Allegations of inappropriate conduct were filed against Mr. Gray in March 2013.
“An investigation was immediately conducted by the school district. In keeping with the district’s standard procedure, Mr. Gray was removed from the classroom and all appropriate agencies were notified. Mr. Gray subsequently resigned from Clayton County Public Schools in May.” Gray received a $100,000 bond when he went before a judge.
