A Hastings teacher was arrested on Thursday on a warrant for first-degree sexual assault of a child, officials say.
Hastings police Sgt. Steven Murphy said Johnathan Shafer, 38, of Hastings was arrested at about 6 p.m. on the warrant. Shafer has since bonded out of custody.
Murphy said the investigation revealed that there was a sexual relationship between Shafer and the victim and that the sexual relationship was ongoing when the victim was 15 years old.
Shafer was a teacher at Hastings High School. The school district sent a letter to parents on Wednesday informing them of the allegations and saying that the teacher would not be allowed on district property until concerns were cleared. Substitutes will cover the classes until the matter is resolved.
Because today is Arbor Day, the courthouse is closed, and Murphy said Shafer would not be arraigned until Monday.
