A local middle school teacher has resigned after being arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a student.

Luis Mercado, who taught at Trautmann Middle School, was charged with sexual assault on a child, improper relation between educator and student, indecency with a child by sexual contact and possession of child pornography.

Each charge is a second-degree felony with the exception of possession of child pornography, which is a third-degree felony.
