A former Longview ISD teacher pleaded guilty Friday to sexual assault of a child and was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Robert Craig Varnell, 57, of Holly Lake Ranch was arrested in May 2011 and released from jail on bond in November 2011. He was booked back into the Gregg County Jail on Sept. 13, 2012.

At the time of that arrest, he was a teacher and co-UIL coordinator at Longview High School. He resigned following his arrest.

Jail records showed a second charge of indecency with a child by sexual contact was dismissed.

A criminal docket document showed Varnell waived his right to a jury trial, and that Varnell would receive time credited for the 806 days he has spent in jail.

The charges stem from allegations Varnell had inappropriate physical contact with a 16-year-old boy numerous times from Aug. 31, 2007, to May 3, court records show.

The improper relationship started when the boy was 13 and Varnell was employed by LeTourneau University’s computer science department, court records show.

Varnell’s attorney, Stephen Smith, could not immediately be reached for comment Friday night.

Varnell entered the plea agreement Friday in Gregg County’s 124th District Court.
