A former Liberty High School teacher, Valerie Celeste Moore, 30, of Houston, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday, March 19, after she pleaded guilty to Indecency With a Child by Exposure.

Moore’s sentence was handed down by a jury in the 75th District Courtroom of Judge Mark Morefield.

Originally arrested in April 2013, Moore’s plea was for a lesser charge than the initial charge of Sexual Assault of a Child.

Evidence presented during her trial showed that Moore sent more than 5,000 text messages to the 15-year-old male student with whom she had a sexual relationship. She also rented a hotel room for the two to share during one of their encounters.

She had been a teacher at Liberty High School less than 45 days when the short-lived relationship began.

Moore, who is currently in the Liberty County Jail, will be eligible for parole in two and a half years, which could be shortened to two years.

After her prison sentence expires, she will be required to register as a sex offender for 10 years. Additionally, she must pay a $2,500 fine.
