Parents are just finding out about an attack on a Maili Elementary School teacher that that happened last week. Honolulu police put out an appeal to the public for information to help in the investigation.
But families are wondering why they weren’t alerted sooner. Sarah Luafalemana lives next to the school. She began noticing more police in the area.
“A couple of days ago they had cops again. I was wondering why they were surrounding the area. It’s unusual for them to patrol,” said Luafalemana.
Crimestoppers released a sketch of a suspect a local male wanted for attempted sexual assault in the second degree.
He is described as about 17-18 years old, about 5fee 10 inches tall and 150 pounds.
He has black hair and brown eyes and as last seen running away from the school at about 4:40 pm on March 5.
“An employee went back to her classroom and was followed by an unknown male. While in the classroom he attempted to attack her and she fended him off and he fled on foot,” said Crimestoppers’ spokeswoman Kim Buffet.
Several parents we talked to say they were surprised to learn of the attack. They said they didn’t get anything from the school alerting them to the situation and were upset they were just finding out a week later.
The principal, Suzie Lee would not answer our questions about whether letters were sent home alerting the community. Parents say they would rather be safe than sorry.
We asked the DOE communications office about whether letters were sent home with students or it was something the school planned to do.
We got no reply to that question even after repeated calls.
Parents may be demanding answers Thursday.
