A prosecutor says a Houston area teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old she claimed to have been mentoring at one point took the girl to a sex shop.

According to CBS affiliate KHOU, 29-year-old Kelly Ann Garcia was charged with indecency with a child and sexual assault of a child after a months-long investigation. The teacher, who has been ordered to stay away from the girl, appeared in court Thursday.

The girl’s mother says her husband notified authorities after he caught the two at a public park, KHOU reports. “[Garcia] seemed nice at the time. She said she wanted to mentor my daughter, and I took her for her word. Now I’m just not as trusting in people,” the 16-year-old’s mother told the station.

Police say the 16-year-old was not in Garcia’s classroom at Hastings High School, KHOU reports. They reportedly met through a mutual friend. Investigators say the two became close and Garcia would stay with the girl after school while she worked on a classroom project.

Police say Garcia took the girl to her apartment on numerous occasions. KHOU reports that many of the details of the affair included in court documents are too graphic for television. A prosecutor explained one of the alleged encounters.

“The allegation is that they did, in fact, drive to a store and purchase a sex toy and drove back to the defendant’s apartment where they engaged in sex,” said prosecutor Markay Stroud.

Garcia, an Alief ISD teacher, was suspended from her teaching position and had her bond set at $60,000, CBS Houston reports.
