A Las Cruces middle and high school basketball coach accused of viewing and downloading child porn told detectives he’s been addicted for 10 years.

Erik Khan, 32, is a coach at Picacho Middle School and volunteer at Mayfield High School. He told police, according to an arrest affidavit, he is able to limit his attraction to young boys by viewing pornographic images of the children being sexually abused.

“I don’t understand how he could actually work for a school district without the proper background checks, and if all those have been done, maybe there needs to be further investigation [into] who we allow to have access with our children,” one neighbor who didn’t want to be identified said.

Khan was arrested Wednesday. According to the arrest affidavit, a computer forensics expert tracked him down. Police said they found hundreds of files of child porn, including pictures and videos, on his computer.

The affidavit states the files include pictures of a man performing oral sex on an 8-year-old boy, and another depicts a man having anal sex with a boy approximately 10 years old.

Khan told detectives he became addicted to child porn while working as a counselor for juvenile sex offenders in Mesa, Ariz., where, in that professional capacity, he viewed child porn. He claims he was never sexually involved with any young boys but says some of the boys made sexual advances toward him, according to the affidavit.

Thursday morning, KFOX 14 stopped by Khan’s home, where three cars were outside, but no one answered the door. Khan told detectives he lives at the home alone.

Neighbors said he only recently moved to the neighborhood and believe he knew detectives were looking for him.

“I’m very nervous, and I’m appalled at the fact that this could be going on under our noses, basically. Everyone around here has children, there, I believe everyone on this block has children, and it’s scary to know that that is happening,” a neighbor who didn’t want to be identified said.

She said everyone in the neighborhood keeps to themselves.

Las Cruces Public School officials said they did a background check on Khan before he started coaching back in 2006.

“People still slip through, and I think with as many people that they have to hire in the school system, I think it’s hard,” said Carol Sullivan.

Sullivan is one of many parents who are shocked by the news.

“It’s upsetting, but I think the school reacted quickly on it,” she said.

The Las Cruces Police Department has been investigating Khan for close to a year. Khan said when he was 8 years old, he was sexually abused by a teen in New Jersey.

Parents said while the details are horrific, it’s up to them to ultimately protect their children.

“I’m in and out of the schools. I think parents need to be active like that,” said Sullivan.

Las Cruces Police said right now, there are no known local victims. Khan is facing 15 counts of exploitation of a child, but police said more charges are possible as the investigation continues.
