A former first-grade teacher at a township private school has been charged with sexually assaulting a female pupil at the school in 2010 and 2011, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.

Jason Fennes, 40, of Van Buren Avenue, Cranford was arrested Wednesday morning by detectives in the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit, prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano said in a news release. He was charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

On Jan. 28, a 10-year-old girl told detectives that Fennes, while employed as a first-grade teacher at Cedar Hill Prep School on Cedar Grove Road, sexually assaulted her in 2010 and 2011 while she was enrolled at the school, Soriano said.

According to a a report on MyCentralJersey.com, this isn’t the first time Fennes has been charged with sexually assaulting a student.

In August 2013, Fennes was indicted twice on charges of sexually assaulting a student, once while he was an elementary-school teacher in Montville between 2005 and 2008 and once as an assistant track coach at Butler High School in 1997 and 1998, the report said.

Fennes was remanded to the Somerset County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail set by Superior Court Judge Kimarie Rahill, the Soriano said.
