A Maine special education teacher has been charged with sexually assaulting and exploiting two boys this summer. Patrik Ian Arsenault, 27, of Norridgewock, who was recently hired as a special education teacher in Farmington and who had been one in Wayne, was arrested Wednesday, according to court records.

He’s accused of assaulting the 6- and 7-year-old boys from Clinton in Belgrade and trading child pornography online for a year, court record said. He’s facing two charges of gross sexual assault and state and two state and a federal charge of sexual exploitation of a minor, Maine Today Media reports .

It was not immediately known if Arsenault was being represented by a lawyer. He could not be reached for comment.

School board minutes show that Arsenault had worked for at least two years at the Wayne Regional Autism Program at the Wayne Elementary School before resigning in June.

He was about to start work this week as a special education teacher at the W.G. Mallett Elementary School in Farmington.

School officials have filed an order banning him from Regional School Unit 9, the school district, said Mt. Blue School District Superintendent Tom Ward.

‘‘He will not work at RSU 9, but we have to follow certain procedure,’’ Ward said. The school is working with its attorneys to decide what to do next, he said.
