A 71-year-old retired Southeast Nebraska teacher faces up to five years in prison after being convicted of third-degree sexual assault of a child.

An Otoe County jury found Gene Schoemann of Nehawka guilty Thursday.

Schoemann taught math and coached for more than 30 years in the Conestoga Public Schools system.

Prosecutors said he molested a 12-year-old he was tutoring. Schoemann testified he was a greeter at a Nebraska City Wal-Mart when he met the child and his family.

Schoemann is set to be sentenced April 22. In addition to facing prison time, he will have to register as a sex offender.
