A high school social studies teacher in the Poconos has been arrested on charges he sexually assaulted a 15-year-old male student two years ago.
Christopher Martinelli, 40, sexually assaulted the boy while teaching 10th grade social studies at Pocono Mountain West High School in 2011 and serving as a youth baseball coach in the community, according to Pocono Mountain Regional police.
The student, now 17, notified school officials on Tuesday, and police were called to investigate.
After a search of Martinelli’s home at 1193 Arbutus Drive in Coolbaugh Township on Tuesday, Martinelli was arrested on charges of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of a minor.
Police said numerous items of evidence were seized from Martinelli’s home, and he was sent to Monroe County Prison under $200,000 bail.
The school district suspended Martinelli. District Judge Kristina Anzini barred him from school property and directed him not to have any contact with students, parents or staff during the investigation.
Police said Martinelli was involved with several community youth organizations in addition to coaching a baseball team.
