A teacher at Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs has been arrested in a sexual assault case involving a minor and police are concerned there may be additional victims.

Police said Bryan Paul Mertz was arrested and his home searched for evidence after an interview with an alleged victim.

Mertz was charged with felony sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, according to police.

The investigation began when the Special Victims Section – Crimes against Children Unit of the police department was contacted by a school resource officer about allegations of a sexual offense involving a high school teacher, according to the police department.  District 20 officials cooperated with law enforcement in the investigation.

District 20 public information officer Nanette Anderson told 7NEWS that Mertz was a teacher at Air Academy High School “until yesterday.”  His name no longer appears on the staff list of the high school’s website.

“Due to Mr. Mertz’s employment as a teacher, he had contact with minors on a regular basis and there is a concern there may be additional victims,” a statement from the police department read.
