A former Paterson Catholic High School gym teacher has been arrested and charged with sexual assault, accused of sexually assaulting a woman, now 19, in June 2010 when she was a 17-year-old junior at the school.

Scott Alfred Handel, 37, of the Hewitt section of West Milford, was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual contact, authorities said.

Handel was arrested at his house Monday by detectives from the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit, authorities said.

The alleged assault took place June 2010, authorities said — the same month that the Roman Catholic Dioceses of Paterson closed the 420-student school, citing a budget shortfall and declining enrollment. A spokesman for the diocese did not immediately return a call seeking comment on Monday afternoon.

Sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in state prison. The criminal sexual contact charge carries a maximum sentence of 18 months in state prison.
