A former Stevens Point high school teacher will spend 8 years in prison for sexually assaulting a family member.

The teacher pled guilty in late April to repeated sexual assault of a child and incest. Both charges carry a maximum 25-year prison sentence. A third charge – exposing genitals – was dismissed.

Wood County Judge Todd Wolf said the severity of the case and the way the defendant handled himself shows that a prison sentence was required. He added that the clear chain of grooming of the victim that lead up to the sexual contact shows the defendant was not thinking of his family at the time.  The defendant also sent a letter to the victim while in jail, violating a no-contact order by the judge.

In addition to the prison time, the man will spend 10 years on extended supervision, will have to undergo counseling, and will have to register as a sex offender. He won’t be allowed to have contact with the victim in the case without the permission of the court once he’s released. The teacher is not being identified to protect the victim’s identity.

The teacher told police he began touching the victim in late 2010 then started having sex with the victim last year. The two had sex between six and 10 times, including two days before police interviewed the teacher and victim.

The teacher resigned November 1st from the school district.
